Jamaica Gates Caribbean Cuisine and Prince Lebanese Grill hold the distinction of being the two Arlington eateries featured on The Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” with Guy Fieri. Both restaurants are popular locally because of the friendly service, excellent food, and reasonable prices.

Executive Chef Barbara Renfro, born & raised in Jamaica, offers up her favorite Jamaican recipes. Her son and daughter-in-law own the restaurant. So this is a family business.

Among the ENTREES, the most popular include Brown Stew Chicken ($12.92) and Brown Stew Fish ($15.92). The brown stew is a brown sauce of Barbara’s secret ingredients. Barbara also uses Jamaican seasonings to good effect on the Oxtails ($14.92) and the Curry Mutton ($14.92) and Gates Curry Chicken ($12.92).

(note:  prices as of July 4, 2012; subject to change)

(*Note: if you order any of the fish entrees, most are bone-in).

Red Stripe Chicken ($13.92) is also popular, probably because the chicken is sautéed in a sauce that includes – you guessed it – Red Stripe beer!

Boston Jerk Pork ($13.92) is one of the hottest (as in spicy hot) menu items. The “Rude Boy Jerk” (chicken or shrimp for $2 more for shrimp) ($12.92) is also spicy. Next time I go, I’m going to try the Curry Shrimp ($13.92) which is sauteed jumbo shrimp in a curry sauce.

If you can’t decide among the entrees, there’s always a sampling with the Kingston Trio ($18.92) which is a choice of three of these: Rude Boy Jerk Chicken, Boston Jerk Pork, Curry Goat, or Oxtails.

The APPETIZERS are also a good way to sample the various Caribbean flavors. The “Patties” are pastries filled with beef, chicken or vegetables. There are also shrimp and tilapia appetizers, as well as fried plantains. The Rude Boy Jerk chicken wings are, obviously, flavored in a jerk sauce. Can’t decide? There’s a Portland Sampler in which you can choose among three appetizers ($10.92) or five appetizers ($15.92).

SOUPS/SALADS: How daring are you? Will you try the Mannish soup (goat soup, with goat meat and green bananas and spinner dumplings)?

There’s also a soup of the day, as well as Jerk Salad ($6.92, with jerk chicken) and Caribbean Salad ($4.92, with tomatoes, cucumbers, pineapple). There are also Jerk Chicken Nachos ($9.92) and an Island Burger ($8.92; you can also get a Jerk burger).

LUNCH SPECIALS are weekdays from 11am-3pm. Lunch menu offerings include: Brown Stew Chicken ($8.92), Rude Boy Jerk Chicken ($8.92…spicy!!!), Gates Curry Chicken ($8.92), catfish ($7.92), patty & cocoa bread ($7.92), and Jerk Salad ($6.92 w/chicken, add $2 more for shrimp).

DESSERTS!!! Did you think I would forget? No way.

Do you like Rum Cake? Have you ever had Jamaican Rum Cake? Here’s your chance…it’s $6.92 on the menu; enough to share.

My favorite is the Bread Pudding ($5.92) because it has Rum Sauce (for a little extra kick/sweet than a normal bread pudding. Try to get the other person in your group to order Pineapple Upside Down Cake ($4.92) so that you can try it, too! If you are a chocoholic, you should go for the Chocolate Rum Runner Cake ($6.92). There’s also Cheesecake w/Strawberry & Mango Sauce ($5.92). Good luck choosing among these desserts!!

BEVERAGES: Yes, beer is available (domestic $4, import $5), but it might be fun to try the Jamaican Sodas ($3.92 each, including: Ting, Pineapple Soda, Kola Champagne, Jamaica Mon Lemonade, and Ginger Beer). For coffee lovers, there’s also Jamaican Mountain Peak Coffee.
